Miss Showgirl

The idea of conducting a Miss Showgirl Competition was first brought to a Queensland Chamber Meeting in February 1982 by Mr Bevan Standsby, the South West Queensland Delegate at the time. With much discussion over the next few months in June 1982 it was announced that a competition would be run in 1983. The first Showgirl Winner was Esther Smith from South West Queensland and Charmaine Bondfield from the Darling Downs was Runner-up. In 1984 the first National Final was held and since then two Queensland girls have taken out the National Title; namely Kim Watkins in 1986 and Kylie Farmer in 1992. Kim became a well known TV presenter. The National Miss Showgirl Competition ceased in 2000. Many of our State Winners and Finalists have achieved excellent employment through their involvement in the Awards, while others have entered Quests such as ‘Girl in a Million”. |

For many Show Societies the Miss Showgirl Awards has been a source of raising funds and may also have contributed to the increase in gate numbers. For many years there have been in excess of 600 Entrants State-wide, making it the largest Competition of its kind in the State Queensland now has an exchange arrangement with South Australia whereby the Miss Showgirl Winner visits the Adelaide Royal Show as their guest. The Rockhampton Show Quest is part of the CQ Sub Chamber Region. The winner from our Show, will go on to compete at the CQ Sub Chamber Finals and the winner from here will go on to compete at the State Chamber Finals which are held at the Brisbane Ekka in August. The Winner of the Rockhampton Show Quest, is invited to become a member of the 2011 Showgirl Committee and all entrants have the opportunity to assist with the coordination of the 2011 Show Ball. The Showgirl Quest is full of history but evolving each year. It still remains a well respected competition that attracts mature, young women as contestants who represent not only themselves but their regions very proudly.

Congratulations to the 2009 StocklandRockhampton & Southern Cross Ten Miss Showgirl Winner Miss Paige Kirk.
“I am extremely proud to have been selected as Miss Rockhampton Showgirl in June 2009.
I am a young, motivated individual who thrives on personal and professional development. Participating in the Miss Showgirl quest provided me with the opportunity among others to express my passion for the region and to further promote our liveable community. As Rockhampton continues to develop into a modern city offering so many experiences, it was a pleasure to represent the Rockhampton Show and to showcase what we have to offer.
The benefit of being involved in Miss Showgirl was I met some fantastic people within my region and the experience will remain as a journey I will never forget. I
encourage any young girl with ambition to enter and to embrace the professional and social development it will no doubt provide.”
